The three coast councils have come together, but consolidating services will take time. In March 2008, the councils of Noosa Shire, Maroochy Shire and Caloundra City amalgamated to form the Sunshine Coast Regional Council. Until the new Council reviews and consolidates its operations, the local council regulations, laws, plans, policies and services in existence prior to amalgamation will continue to apply for the geographical areas of the former shires.
